Learning Objectives

• Discuss mandatory reporting requirements as well as types of abuse/neglect investigated by DCFS.

• Discuss the process of how a report goes through the DCFS system, starting with a CPS investigation and what happens next.

BIO:

Marnie has spent her career working with children and families.  She started working with at-risk youth in 1999 while working at the Salt Lake Detention Center.  She spent 3 years working with Youth Corrections in different facilities before making the move to the Division of Child and Family Services.

Marnie has now been with DCFS for 20 years.  She first worked as a CPS investigator, assessing children and families where there were concerns of abuse and neglect.  She then supervised a team of CPS workers for a few years before becoming the Intake Program Administrator in 2010.  She currently supervises a team of 30 workers who take reports of possible child abuse and neglect.  The intake team takes over 70,000 phone calls per year and covers the entire State of Utah.  Marnie has been presenting to community partners on mandatory reporting for the past 12 years now.

Marnie got her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in Human Development and Family Studies.  She is currently a licensed social service worker.  When not working, Marnie likes to spend time with family and play golf.
